Rohingya: To stop human trafficking by sea routes

Recently, according to the reports of accidents and deaths of boat- people who were trying to go to Malaysia by sea. The accidents appear to be heartbreaking consequences for Rohingyas whose family members tried to choose the perilous routes by sea. Thousands of Rohingya people had been sent to Malaysia through these routes operated by some human trafficker groups.

Authority forces to register as Bengali

Maungdaw, Arakan State:  The authority – Burma border security force (Nasaka) –is forcing Rohingya community to register as Bengali, with registration process which includes taking digital fingerprints and photographs since early this month, according to a village admin officer from Maungdaw.

Rohingya Couple arrested for marriage after 14 years in Mangdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State:  A couple was arrested by Nasaka (Burma’s border security force) at Maungdaw north on December 21, over the allegation that he had married without permission from the concerned authority after 14 years later, according to a friend of the victim.

UNICEF calls for action on water, sanitation in Rakhine State

People living in and near the Internally Displaced Person (IDP) sites in Rakhine State are facing health risks due to restricted access to safe potable water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene, according to a statement by UNICEF on December 21.

The queen says she is for freedom, is she really?

Policy Questions for Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi has just visited Thailand. During her trip she was once again treated with adulation appropriate for a queen, and to which she responded with queen-like vague but feel-good pronouncements. However, Daw Suu is no longer only a subject of idolatry; she is now a hands-on politician - an MP.  It is not enough for her to make nonspecific and hence empty statements. She has to convey clear policy points for the many critical problems facing Burma. This is her responsibility as a leader, and also the means by which the people of the country, now formally her constituents, will evaluate her performance and hold her accountable.
